Breaking down Kyler Murray and Dwayne Haskins’ draft stock

Kirby Lee and Steve Mitchell/USA TODAY Sports

The 2019 NFL draft is just under one week away. The top two quarterbacks in this year’s draft class are Oklahoma’s Kyler Murray and Ohio State’s Dwayne Haskins. Both will likely hear their name called within the first ten selections on draft day. Despite being a first round selection, not every quarterback has the ability to translate as a day one starter in the NFL. However, Murray and Haskins have special talent that should carry over, when they get into the league.

Kyler Murray

Murray has that rare combination of elite playing speed and a hose for an arm. As his tape shows during his time in college, teams had a difficult time preparing a game plan for Murray, because he can run the ball himself or sling it down the field. He has the ability to extend plays and make accurate throws on the run, when avoiding pressure.

Some knocks on Murray that make people cautious are his smaller measurable’s. Murray, just 5’10 207 pounds according to his weigh-in at the scouting combine is the determining factor that generates speculation. Perhaps scouting evaluators have good reason to have skepticism with his small frame, but he plays much bigger than what he’s listed as. Murray won the 2018 Heisman trophy award in his final season, where his undersized hight didn’t affect him one bit.

Murray will more than likely be selected inside the top five with the possibility of going number one overall to the Arizona Cardinals. Teams like the New York Giants, Miami Dolphins, Denver Broncos, and Washington Redskins have all expressed interest in Murray during the scouting process.

Murray’s 2018 stats:

-69% completion percentage

-4,361-passing yards

-42 touchdowns

-7 interceptions

Dwayne Haskins

Haskins is the prototypical quarterback who is a pocket passer and can throw the deep ball with touch and feel. Haskins reaches the measurables that a majority of evaluators want in their quarterback, as he’s listed at 6’3″ and 231 pounds. He doesn’t have much of any speed, but can extend plays by throwing quite well under pressure.

Haskins set the Ohio State record with throwing 50 touchdowns in his final season as a Buckeye. He also threw for 4,831-yards and limited his mistakes to only 8 interceptions. He was awarded the Big Ten offensive player of the year for his phenomenal 2018 season. Playing in such a prostyle offense under Urban Meyer should help Haskins transition fairly easy in the NFL.

He’s projected to hear his name called within the first 10 selections of the draft, and it could even be inside the top 5. Haskins has been linked to the New York Giants in several mock drafts throughout the process,  but he could end up with any team that needs some stability at quarterback.

Haskins’ 2018 stats:

-70% completion percentage

-4,831-passing yards

-50 touchdowns

-8 interceptions
