Canelo Alvarez unifies and the weekend roundup

Saturday, May 4th from Las Vegas, Nevada

Saul “Canelo” Alvarez/Daniel Jacobs

Canelo Alvarez unified the WBA, WBC, and IBF middleweight titles by narrowly beating Daniel Jacobs by unanimous decision.

Alvarez (52-1-2, 35 KO’s) dominated the first seven rounds of the match.  His excellent head movement frustrated Jacobs, who had a hard time landing anything of significance.  Jacobs’ jab wouldn’t land and when it did, it had hardly any snap to it.

From the seventh round on, Jacobs (35-3, 29 KO’s) became more physical with Alvarez and was able to land a big left hand that Alvarez rolled with.  There was a great exchange in the eighth when both fighters landed multiple punches.

In the end it wasn’t the action fight we expected but it was close on two judge’s scorecards.  The official scores were 115-113, 115-113, and 116-112.

After the fight Jacobs stated that he may move up to super middleweight.  This would be a wise decision considering he struggled to make weight and blew the mandatory IBF second day weigh in.

Canelo’s next fight may be a third GGG fight, a middleweight unification with Demetrius Andrade, or a move to super middleweight to challenge champion Callum Smith.

Vergil Ortiz Jr./Mauricio Herrera

Vergil Ortiz Jr. continued to show why he is considered one of the best up and coming prospects in boxing by keeping his unbeaten knockout streak alive by finishing Mauricio Herrera with one punch in round three of their welterweight fight.

Shortly before the second round ended, Ortiz (13-0, 13 KO’s) rocked Herrera with a right hand that wobbled him.  He followed with a flurry of punches that sent Herrera down as the round ended.

Herrera (24-9, 7 KO’s) was unsteady to start the 3rd and Ortiz took advantage by landing a huge right hand that had Herrera out cold before he hit the canvas.  The referee jumped in immediately before Ortiz could inflict more damage and the fight was waved off.

“I want to go back to 140 and get that world title,” said Ortiz in the ring after the fight.  “There are a number of champions that I believe I can take on right now and I hope others believe that.  If they tell me there is a world title fight in two weeks, I’ll take that right now.”

Joseph Diaz Jr./Freddy Fonseca

Joseph Diaz Jr. dominated every minute of his bout against Freddy Fonseca in their junior lightweight fight.

Diaz (29-1, 15 KO’s) was aggressive from the start and landed multiple left hooks to the body.  He pummeled Fonseca (26-3-1, 17 KO’s) in every round.  Diaz unleashed a barrage of punches with bad intent in the seventh round forcing Fonseca’s corner to throw in the towel.

After the fight Diaz called out world champion Tevin farmer.  “Tevin, where you at?  At 130, I’m feeling strong, like a beast, and I’m going to become a champion, I promise you guys.  I’m ready for a world title my next fight.  I wanted Tevin Farmer on this card.  Then he started to talk all this smack.  Let’s get it Tevin, let’s get this fight.”

Saturday, May 4th from Stockton, California

Artur Beterbiev/Radivoje Kalajdzic

Artur Beterbiev retained his IBF light heavyweight title with a fifth round stoppage of Radivoje Kalajdzic in the main event of the Top Rank card in Stockton, California that competed head-to-head Saturday night with the DAZN mega fight between Canelo Alvarez and Daniel Jacobs.

Beterbiev (14-0, 14 KO’s) landed powerful shots at close range the entire fight.  Kalajdzic (24-2, 17 KO’s) was down late in the third when Beterbiev landed a combination that nearly sent him through the ropes.

In the fifth, Beterbiev hit Kalajdzic with a combination and the referee waved off the fight.  Kalajdzic had taken a serious beating through four rounds so the stoppage was justified.

Up next for Beterbiev could be a light heavyweight unification fight with WBO champion Sergey Kovalev.
