The New York Jets showed they have potential to win but don’t have the discipline to conquer other teams while they’re down. The Jets have a bevy of issues that need to be sorted out from the management to the players and if they figure out how to fix some key issues, they have a chance to contend in 2019. However, this is 2018 and the product on the field is mediocre at best.
The Jets traveled to Tennessee to play the Titans and came off hot but faltered in the end. In the first quarter Jason Myers kicked a 54-yard field goal to put the Jets up 3-0. Trumaine Johnson picked off Marcus Mariota’s pass and returned it to the house to put Gang Green up 10-0 in only seven minutes of action. A pair of field goals by Myers, 34 and 43 yarders respectively, put the Jets up 16-0 with 2:51 remaining in the first half. Mariota threw a 12-yard touchdown to tight end Anthony Firkser to put the Titans on the board and make it 16-6 after a blocked PAT going into halftime.
Myers made his kick from 39 yards to put the Jets up 19-6 with 10:39 left in the third quarter and Tennessee answered back with a one-yard touchdown run by Derrick Henry to make it 19-13 Jets with 7:44 left in the third. Myers kicked his fifth and final field goal of the day from 39 yards to make it 22-13 Jets entering the fourth quarter. Ryan Succop decided to get in on the kicker battle and blasted two field goals in the fourth quarter to make it 22-19 with 5:39 remaining. Mariota and the Titans’ offense drove down the field with under two minutes in the fourth and managed to score another touchdown, an 11-yard pass from Mariota to wide receiver Corey Davis to put the Titans up 26-22 with 36 seconds to go. Jets quarterback Josh McCown tried going downfield but was picked off by Malcolm Butler to seal the Titans victory. The Jets fell to 3-9 and the Titans are now 6-6 to stay alive for a wild card spot.
To say the Jets are struggling on offense is an understatement and excuses could be made. The team was forced to start backup Josh McCown for the third consecutive game as Sam Darnold is dealing with a foot injury. No matter who has been under center this year, the result has been the same: lackluster performances and playcalling. McCown finished 17 of 30 for 128 yards and an interception late in the fourth quarter. The team finished with 280 yards of offense and won the time of possession battle. The Jets have trouble scoring as the 22 points scored was the fourth-highest total they had this season. Only one offensive touchdown by Gang Green shows the issues that need correcting.
Change in coaching staff?
It would be shocking to see the Jets begin firing some coaches during the season but it is obvious to anyone watching that changes need to be made. The Green Bay Packers announced they have fired Mike McCarthy and Todd Bowles should be next. In an offensive-minded league, teams need to make a push to have offensive coaches that could help the team. The Jets need to fire at least Todd Bowles and remove Jeremy Bates as Offensive Coordinator. The offense has trouble moving the ball on a regular basis and the play designs aren’t anything opposing defenses have difficulties adjusting to.
Bowles is a defensive-minded head coach but the defense hasn’t been forcing turnovers as of late. Trumaine Johnson’s pick-six was the first turnover the Jets have forced in five games, tying a league record, and the team as a whole seems undiscplined.
“Dumb mistakes at dumb times costs us ballgames, and that’s why we’re in the position we are in,” Bowles said during his post-game press conference. Now sitting at 3-9, the Jets only sit behind Oakland and San Francisco in the 2019 draft order.
