Los Angeles- The Los Angeles Lakers are interested in two candidates to fill their head coaching position after former head coach Luke Walton and the organization mutually parted ways.
Sixers’ assistant Monty Williams is one of the candidates that the Lakers are intrigued by. Williams spent five years with the New Orleans Hornets/Pelicans and had a record of 133-221. Williams spent some time away from coaching after his wife passed away in a car accident.
Williams brings a sense of discipline, as well as experience that the Lakers’ desperately need to get back to playing Lakers’ basketball. However, there is some speculation that if the Lakers’ brings in Williams as the head coach for the Lakers, Anthony Davis might be intrigued to play for them.
The other candidate that is creating some buzz with potentially grabbing the head coaching position is Tyronn Lue. Lue was released from his coaching duties during the first half of the 2018-2019 season with the Cleveland Cavaliers. Before he was released, he gave them their first championship in team history as well as held an impressive 169-103 record.
Lue has strong ties with the Lakers’ organization as a player, as well as coaching LeBron James. “He put us in position to win, he put us in position to succeed,” James said. “And more importantly, he gave—all the onus was on the players. He gave us the responsibility to go out and do what we needed to do to win ball games and that led us to—while he was at the helm—three Eastern Conference Finals, three Finals, one championship.”
If Lue becomes the head coach, maybe fans can see if he can bring back the “Triangle” style offense back to play. The Lakers are rebuilding and need a push in the right direction. Bringing back someone who is familiar with some of the players, as well as the offense, could be a great fit.
