Las Vegas Aces: A’ja Wilson mirrors Bill Laimbeer’s Persona

(May 4, 2018) The Las Vegas Aces held Media Day on Thursday and it was the first time the media had an opportunity to meet with some of the players. A’ja Wilson was impressive off the court, as she is on the court. Instantly, you can tell why Head Coach/GM Bill Laimbeer selected Wilson number one overall in the 2018 WNBA draft.

I sat down with A’ja and we talked about training camp, players, and coaches. Wilson is a high IQ basketball player that gets it. By it, I mean; intelligent, basketball savvy, a leader, and mentally tough. A’ja Wilson has a colorful personality and she fits right in with the big name personalities like former Los Angeles Sparks C, Lisa Leslie, whom A’ja Wilson looked up to as a role model, before she came a National Champion at the University of South Carolina Gamecocks.

Collegiate Honors & Notes:

  • Lead the Gamecocks to the 2017 NCCA Championship.
  • Named Most Outstanding Player of the 2017 NCAA Championship.
  • Was a consensus 2018 National Player of the Year.
  • Three-time SEC Player of the Year.
  • Four-time ALL-American.

Another interesting note about A’ja Wilson is that her father Roscoe played professional basketball in the NBA for (10 years). The 6’4″ Center said, “Head Coach Bill Laimbeer is hard nosed, tough, and he demands the best of us.” Just like Roscoe played on the court and coached her up throughout her collegiate career.
