During the mid stages of free agency, the Browns pulled off the unthinkable when General Manager John Dorsey completed a trade with the New York Giants in exchange for Odell Beckham Jr. The Giants received the Browns 2019 first-round pick (No.17 overall), third round pick (No.95 overall), right guard Kevin Zeitler, and safety Jabrill Peppers.
This trade occurs just one year removed from Beckham signing his 5- year $90 million dollar contract. The Browns appear to be all in on Beckham, but how “all-in” is he? Beckham has missed voluntary workouts while the majority of the team has been working together at the teams facility in Berea, Ohio. Instead, he’s taken matter into his own hands and has been training in Los Angeles on his own.
Workouts certainly are voluntary and he isn’t forced to be there, but when you are the new guy in the locker room it’s probably a good idea to be at the team workouts. Not to mention, he has an entire new playbook to learn, as well as get into rhythm with Baker Mayfield.
On Wednesday, Beckham took to the podium to talk about how he felt during his first day of mandatory minicamp.
“I’m still getting there, it felt good just to be back out here,” said Beckham. “It’s what you dreamed all your life, in a new place, new environment, so just catching on and catching up with teammates to try to make sure I get to where I know I can be at.”
Having Beckham their participating in drills has to give head coach Freddie Kitchens and the rest of his staff a slight sigh of relief having him in the building. There’s no doubt, he’s a bonafide top five pass catcher, but he also brings some drama along with his antics.
Despite his antics that comes with him, his play speaks for itself, as teams are forced to game plan for his play and more often than not, still can’t stop the three-time pro bowler. Beckham creates mis-matches all over the field, and can line up inside and outside the cashes.
Beckham also spoke on the fact that his versatility will benefit the Browns, as opposing teams will have a harder time game planning for him.
“Some receivers go to the left side, they go to the right side,” said Beckham. “When you have somebody who can move all the way around it helps the offense out more, you can’t really game plan for it. It makes it a lot harder for the other team to game plan.”
Beckham joins a loaded Cleveland offense that possesses Baker Mayfield, Nick Chubb, Jarvis Landry, and David Njoku. Heading into the 2019 season, the Browns have the highest expectations that they’ve been held to in over a decade. With the majority of the weight being thrown on the shoulders of Mayfield and Beckham, it’ll be crucial for them to get off on the same page early in the season.
Look for Mayfield to spread the ball across the field to all his weapons on offense, but he’ll more than likely use Beckham as the focal point in moving the chains down field.
