Raiders Drop Another Game to Young Gunslinger

The Oakland Raiders fell short again after a close, hard-fought game to the Kansas City Chiefs. The Raiders trailed 33-30 late in the fourth quarter with just under seven minutes left. The young, electrifying, Patrick Mahomes then drove the Chiefs offense right through the Oakland defense going 75 yards on 10 plays leading to a touchdown. The Raiders eventually scored a late field goal, followed up by an onside kick attempt that Kansas City recovered. The Chiefs won 40-33 giving them their 10th win of the season and dropping the Raiders record to 2-10.

Derek Carr finished the game with 285 yards through the air and three touchdowns. The Oakland offense hung in well with Kansas City’s throughout the game, but the Raiders secondary couldn’t stop the momentum of Andy Reid’s offensive personnel.

Carr has now gone seven consecutive games without throwing an interception. Carr surpassed Rich Gannon for second place in Raiders history for most career passing yards. Not to mention, Carr’s second Touchdown pass today put him in seventh place all-time for touchdown passes in a quarterback’s first five years in the NFL.

It was a tight end showcase in Oakland as Travis Kelce, Jared Cook and Lee Smith all stood out today. Kelce finished the game with 168 receiving yards and two touchdowns.

Smith, who caught his first touchdown since 2015, said “We’re picking up speed and not quitting, and the fans were into it, so today was fun. I am proud of the guys in the locker room.”

Cook went for 100 yards receiving with one touchdown.

“We just kept fighting and just kept putting points on the board,” he said.

Head coach Jon Gruden’s tight ends have been a focal point in his offense. Cook is on pace for a career year in receiving yards and touchdowns. Carr has shown comfort throwing to Cook this season, targeting him on average seven times a game.

Gruden’s first game facing the rookie quarterback Mahomes didn’t go as planned as Mahomes repeatedly flicked the ball downfield for big chunk plays.

“We had the crowd going and we had them backed up and we needed one stop,” Gruden said. “You have to credit that young quarterback in his first year in the NFL. He ticked me off today”.

The Raiders will face off against Kansas City one more time this year on Dec. 30. The Raiders look to get back in the win column as they will take on the Steelers in Oakland on Sunday, Dec. 9.
