Rams Game Plan:
The Rams have been successful on the offensive side of the ball all season, however when they are at their best is when they pound the ball on the ground. The Rams offense really goes through their running backs, where they win the battle at the line of scrimmage. Over the regular season Todd Gurley was regarded as one of the most complete backs, running with speed and power. Gurley is also one of the better pass-catchers coming out of the backfield catching passes from Goff as a check down option. This season Gurley has a staggering 19 rushing touchdowns and four receiving touchdowns (includes playoffs). Since the playoffs have started Gurley has faced some injuries, which have limited his action on the field. Newly acquired C.J Anderson has produced for the Rams during their playoff run. Anderson has rushed for two touchdowns and 167-yards during the playoffs, being the Rams lead back against the Cowboys and the Saints.
The Rams need to generate a pass rush to interfere with Tom Brady’s timing and rhythm. Aaron Donald led the NFL during the regular with 20.5 sacks. Donald’s ability to break free from blockers generates openings for his teammates to get their hands on the quarterback. The Rams also have Ndamukong Suh who generates matchup problems, getting after the quarterback and stopping the run.
Another game plan the Rams must implement is playing press coverage on defense. By playing press coverage on the New England wide receivers, it will make Brady have to hold onto the football longer and give the Rams defensive lineman more time to apply pressure. Brady has been successful getting the ball out quick when he faced the chargers and the Chiefs.
Patriots Game Plan:
The Patriots have been dominant throughout the playoffs by a running attack led by Sony Michel and the quick release of Tom Brady. Michel has dashed through the open hole that his offensive line has created, giving him 242-yards rushing and five touchdowns over his two playoff games. When the Patriots run the ball effectively, it makes the linebackers and safeties have to “play for the run”. With that being said, it gives Brady more opportunities to find open receivers.
The Patriots are known for taking away the opposing teams offensive weapon. Bill Belichick will have to stop the duo attack of Gurley and Anderson who have caught lightning in a bottle during the playoffs. By doing so, it will force the Rams to lean on the right arm of Jared Goff. Goff has grown tremendously as a quarterback in Sean McVay’s system, but he’s more of a complementary piece to Todd Gurley.
Brady will need to continue the quick release passes before the defensive pass rush can get to him. He’s had success with hitting Julian Edelman on quick slants and underneath routes. If Brady can keep getting rid of the ball in a fast manner then it will eliminate the effectiveness of Aaron Donald.
