The UNLV Lady Rebels tipped off against Mountain West conference rival, Wyoming.
What started as a low scoring first quarter quickly exploded into an offensive and defensive onslaught for coach Lindy La Rocque’s UNLV Rebels.
Coming off of an unspeakable loss to Stanford, the Rebels come into today’s matchup 2-1 and entered conference play against the Wyoming Cowgirls.
Center Keyana Wilfred played hard on both sides of the ball in the first half with steals and deflections to compliment her 8 points. While a close game for most of the first half, the Lady Rebels’ hunkered down and played smart, well-coached basketball and watched their first half lead balloon to 9.
Keyana Wilfred wasn’t done. Smart, communicative and physical, the 6’3” center did it all finishing with 20 total points. She didn’t, however, do it alone as forwards Delaynie Byrne and Desi-Rae Young would also have impressive outings with 9 points each respectively.
At just over 45% on 19 of 42 shooting, the Lady Rebels played with more grit and overall hustle than the Cowgirls. From coach La Rocque’s staff to the team’s bench, the Rebel energy was electric and in the absence of a home crowd, it was necessary. It’s also refreshing to see a UNLV Rebels squad that actually attacks the rim and frequents the free throw line as they would shoot 11 of 18 from the charity stripe.
This Lady Rebels team is talented and an absolute blast to watch. Save for offensive rebounds and fast break points, UNLV dominated every aspect of this game, and are certain to continue their Mountain West dominance as as they play Wyoming again on Monday in this conference double-header.
