Aces return to practice; look ahead to home date with New York Liberty

Las Vegas, NV – The Las Vegas Aces returned home after splitting two games on the road last week, earning a win with perhaps their best overall team effort in Atlanta, and then dropping the next game after an uneven performance in a disappointing loss to the Liberty in New York.

As has been the case throughout his tenure at the helm in Vegas, Wednesday’s practice saw team defence, sound communication, crisp passing and solid execution in half court sets as points of emphasis for Aces’ head coach Bill Laimbeer’s squad. While never one to reveal too much, following Wednesday’s session, Laimbeer did seem to be somewhat pleased with his team’s effort and execution on Wednesday, while not being entirely thrilled with their record after five games.

“I think we’re still a work in progress right now…Some players need to step up, or collectively they have to step up. Our defense is ahead of our offense, no question about that one; we should be a better offensive team, shooting-wise…working Liz into the structure is time-consuming, but overall we need to make some shots.” – Head Coach Bill Laimbeer

The Aces are 2-3 on the season, and sitting in fifth place in the WNBA’s Western Conference following their two-game eastern road trip, and look to get back to .500 with a win in front of their home crowd on the world-famous Las Vegas Strip at “the House,” inside Mandalay Bay against the visiting Liberty. Friday’s game at the Mandalay Bay Events Center tips off at 7:30 pm sharp.

Perhaps sensing the opportunity to lead by example, following the conclusion of Wednesday’s 90-minute practice, Wilson stayed on the floor and continued to work with assistant coach extraordinaire Vickie Johnson on a variety of different looks off of the pick and roll game as she looked to rediscover the deft touch in the midrange that defined her game in her rookie year.

Not to be outdone, a number of fellow starters and key performers put in additional work after practice as well, as a group that included do-everything wing Kayla McBride and Kelsey Plum worked on attacking defenders one-on-one out of isolation situations, while center Liz Cambage worked with assistant Kelly Raimon on the other end of the floor.

Quick Hits:

Veteran floor leader Sydney Colson was at practice but her participation was limited, as a precaution due to still not being cleared from concussion protocol after taking a nasty spill and hitting her head on the floor in last Sunday’s loss to the Liberty in Westchester. Reserve forward Tamera Young was absent for personal reasons. Former Bishop Gorman, UNLV Runnin’ Rebels, Orlando Magic, and current South Bay Lakers forward Stephen Zimmerman worked out with the team for a portion of Wednesday’s practice.
