“I’m so happy to be here. I love to fight.” -Amanda Serrano
New York, NY – Amanda Serrano, the record-breaking seven weight division champion and one-half of the fighting Serrano sisters spoke to the media on Wednesday in New York ahead of her title defense against the undefeated Heather Hardy. Serrano (36-1-1, 27 KO), a native of Carolina, Puerto Rico now living in Brooklyn will challenge the undefeated Hardy (22-0, 4 KOs) this Saturday night in the co-main event of a loaded Matchroom USA card streaming exclusively on DAZN headlined by undefeated lightweight phenom Devin “The Dream” Haney, to be broadcast live from the HULU Theater at the World’s Most Famous Arena, Madison Square Garden.
Not since Paulie Malignaggi won a decision over Zab Judah at the then-brand-new Barclay’s Center in downtown Brooklyn has there been such a high-profile pugilistic battle for boxing supremacy as this highly anticipated bout between the two ferocious female fighters.
As a record-breaking world champion in seven weight classes (having won belts from 115-lbs. all the way up to 140) and current WBO female featherweight titlist, Serrano could have cherry-picked a “soft touch,” however as she explained during Wednesday’s final media gathering, she wanted to test herself against another one of the toughest female fighters in the game today, by choosing to tangle with Hardy (the interim WBC featherweight belt will also be on the line Saturday night).
“I have the privilege of challenging any of the champions, and when we looked at all the champions we didn’t want to fight for a vacant title like all these girls do, so we chose Heather Hardy. No disrespect, Heather Hardy is as tough as they come so we knew she wouldn’t back down from the fight. This fight will be 20 minutes,10 rounds of non-stop action,” proclaimed the 30-year-old veteran of 38 professional prizefights.
“Friday night will be a treat, and if you can’t make it out, download DAZN. We will show we deserve to be here. It’s going to be a hell of a fight. It will be a great night of boxing,” concluded Serrano.
For her part, Hardy – who has also competed professionally in mixed martial arts- stated that she is also ready to show and prove to fans that two female fighters deserve to be the chief supporting bout on such a high-profile card at MSG: “(I know to some) I have become known as the girl talking about the pay and equality. I just want to say it’s never a reflection of how grateful I am to be here,” the ever-enthusiastic blonde bomber said, before continuing “I’m thankful for Amanda choosing me, she’s the best boxer in the world right now. I’m ready, I’m the toughest girl in boxing.”
Joseph Markowski, DAZN’s Executive Vice President for North American operations noted that the visionary company is “about to embark on a tremendous four-month period for DAZN here in the United States. The schedule we’re about to put together is already one of the strongest in the history of the sport of boxing. It would be very easy to stand here today and look past this weekend and look at some of the fighters, and matchups to come in the next few weeks and months, with the likes of Ruiz vs. AJ, Triple G; and very shortly we will make an announcement on Canelo Alvarez’s next fight. Huge fights, huge names, and a packed schedule starting this weekend. We don’t want to look past this weekend, for us it’s the start of the season of fight sports. We’re putting that season together and it begins this weekend at The Hulu Theater at Madison Square Garden.”
