Every fantasy expert or fantasy football addict and strategist like myself will always tell you that taking a quarterback early in your draft will come back to haunt you. Ideally, the fifth round is considered the earliest you should take a quarterback — and even then that could be a reach. I usually wait until about round 8/9 after I’ve filled my two running back spots, my two wide receivers, a flex, and the fill my first bench players.
However, I’m seeing a trend that I am not liking — and that is that teams that are taking quarterbacks are becoming far more successful.
I had the 12th pick out of 12 teams in my draft this year. Where I messed up, was not “reaching” for a quarterback with the first pick in the sixth round.
The team that first a quarterback in round three (Mahomes) is currently tied for first place. The only quarterbacks taken were the aforementioned Mahomes, and then Deshaun Watson who was taken in the middle of the 5th round. This proved to be a costly decision. By passing in the first pick of the sixth round, I then didn’t have a pick until the last selection in the 7th round. I sat there as seven quarterbacks went before I made a selection. Matt Ryan, Baker Mayfield, Aaron Rodgers, Carson Wentz, Drew Brees, Tom Brady, and Ben Roethlisberger. All gone.
This left me with a dilemma. What quarterback should I take. because it’s now or never. My top options were Dak Prescott, Russell Wilson, and Cam Newton. I went with Newton, who now is no longer on my team after two atrocious weeks and now succumbing to injury.
The teams that have Mahomes, Watson, Wentz, and Ryan are all in 1st-4th place. Brady team is in 6th with one loss.
Other guys like me? Either sitting at 0-3 or 1-2. Currently I need about 23 points from Tarik Cohen and Terry McLaurin as I write this to determine if I will get my first win or not. I’m playing against Dak Prescott, and through moves I’ve made, my starting quarterback is Jimmy G, with Carr on the bench.
It’s a rough time. Next time, make sure you snag a quarterback early, because the team that has Patrick Mahomes likely isn’t losing any time soon.
