Arike Ogunbowale, Wings Overcome Lynx Late

Lorena Torres

The Dallas Wings won their fourth game of the season 89-86. Arike Ogunbowale released the freak in more than one way. She not only scored a team-high 19 points but debuted NBA MVP Giannis Antetokounmpo’s signature.

The Nike athlete matched up against one of the W’s greatest scorers, Odyssey Sims. Sims’ former coach, now current Wings coach Brian Agler sang praises for both guards saying “I’ve coached Odyssey I know what kind of competitor she is… She’s [Ogunbowale] a very confident player. Offensively she’s as confident as there is in the league.”

The two would go back and forth answering each other’s attempts to raise their team in victory at the final buzzer. With the help of her teammates, Ogunbowale’s 7 point quarter would outweigh Sims.

Dallas continued to fight down the stretch proves that they’re getting better at closing games. The final minutes of games this season they’ve seen heartbreak and passion. Never a team to give up an easy win Dallas let games fall through the cracks. But the effort hasn’t been a reason for any late-game collapses.

Tonight Dallas put energy, hustle, and execution together to win against Minnesota. Coach Agler mentioned the team’s growth in that aspect mentioning the amount of time they’ve spent working on late-game out-of-bounds plays. “We were so bad early we had to practice and practice drawing up plays and having them execute. It takes a certain maturity as a player and as a group to execute some of these things. And to see them do that in the guts of the game in sort of a high stakes game, I was really proud of them.”

A True Team Win

Though the team made their bones on the closing minutes of the game players contributed throughout even when facing a 14 point deficit. “I think everyone’s contributing, we had like 6 people in double figures,” said Ogunbowale in the post-game presser.

Ever the perfectionist Kayla Thornton set her 17 points aside to praise her teammates and acknowledge some much-needed improvement. “We still have a lot of growing to do but it’s one more win and with have to keep going.”

To cap off this much-needed bounce back win Dallas used the ball to make everyone better. The team had a season-high 22 assists something highlighted by many of the players post game. Theresa Plaisance spoke about it and her production saying “Rebounding is something that I can do when I’m down low and I’m in the position to do so boxing out and grabbing those rebounds was something I was doing. As well as my teammates getting me open. I don’t really create for myself so my teammates do a good job of finding me offensively to hit those shots. So it all goes to them, really.”

As a reward for their hard-fought 3 games in 5 days whirlwind, the Wings will have the next two days off. On Wednesday they’ll get back in the gym to game plan for the Indiana Fever, a team they’ve yet to win against this season. Now with a few games under their belt since their last meeting they look to turn the tides of history.
