Borussia Dortmund Grab 3 Points Over Inconsistent Wolfsburg

Borussia Dortmund, a team on the hunt for their first Bundesliga title in eight years, faced an interesting challenge when they visited the Volkswagen stadium to take on Wolfsburg who held 6th place with 39 points. Wolfsburg themselves came into this match with a 7-game unbeaten streak, but Dortmund have proven to be a tough opponent for The Wolves. Borussia Dortmund hadn’t conceded a single goal to Wolfsburg in their last six Bundesliga matches and had beaten Wolfsburg in their last four Bundesliga home matches. The Wolves have never lost five consecutive home matches to any team in the top flight of German soccer, and Dortmund were ready to rewrite history.

As the match kicked off, possession was obviously lopsided in favor of Borussia Dortmund. The amount of possession translated to far more attacking chances created and pressure applied on Wolfsburg’s defense. To give an example, Dortmund had themselves 75% of the games possession 20 minutes into the game.

The ongoing chances and possession from Dortmund paid off in the first half as Thorgan Hazard played a wonderful cutback pass that Erling Haaland missed but Raphael Guerrero got on the end of to give the Black and Yellow a 1-0 lead in the 32nd minute.

Wolfsburg knew that they needed to be far more careful against such a potent team and although they had a minor spell of attacking possession at the end of the half, the score remained 1-0 when both teams went into their own dressing rooms.

There was little hesitation to the resumption of the game for Wolfsburg as they had their best chance at scoring thus far in the 46th minute when a shot from Renato Steffen went just over the bar when he was 1-on-1 with the goalkeeper.

Dortmund weren’t the quickest to get the second half going. They went on to register zero shots on target in the first 30 minutes of the second half as they looked like a shell of themselves.

But all it takes is one chance.

Wolfsburg would go on to rue their missed chances because in the 78th minute, newly substituted Jadon Sancho found Achraf Hakimi on the counter attack and the wingback was able to double Dortmund’s lead to 2-0. Sancho is now the first player this season to be involved in 30 goals (he’s just 20 years old).

Things went from bad to worse for Wolfsburg. Felix Klaus was subject to a red card from the referee after the Video Assistant Referee was used to replay and review a challenge he did on a Dortmund defender that saw him clip his ankle (although the challenge did not look deliberate). Wolfsburg now had just 10 men on for the last 10 minutes with a 2-goal deficit.

A game Wolfsburg were inches away from getting back into this game slipped away in the span of just a few minutes. But, these are the types of matches teams need to win if they want any chance of winning a league title against a behemoth like Bayern Munich. Wolfsburg’s next fixture is away from home against Bayer Leverkusen on May 26th while Borussia Dortmund’s next match is a clash of the titans when they host Bayern Munich on the same day.
