Can the Raiders Make a Run at Antonio Brown?

The Raiders hold possession of three first round picks (No.4, No.24 and No. 27) on day one of the NFL draft. Along with another early pick that slots in at No.35 overall. Matter of fact, they have six picks within the first 100 selections. That’s a lot of draft capital in one draft, meaning all three of their first-round selections would hit free agency in the same offseason. Every first round pick is a four-year contract with a fifth-year option.

Antonio Brown has expressed his frustration within the Pittsburgh Steelers organization numerous times during this offseason. Brown has been vocal on his twitter account, thanking the Steelers organization and fan base for his time but he’s ready to move on. He’s still currently employed by the Steelers organization, but seems to be confident his time in Pittsburg is over. Brown just had a meeting with Mr. Rooney discussing their differences and what the future holds.

It’s unclear what Brown’s trade value will be around the league, but the Raiders have a lot of picks to send the Steelers way. Another thing to consider, the Raiders desperately need a vertical deep-threat wide receiver and Gruden has already spoke last season about how he’s a fan of Brown’s work ethic in practice.

Quarterback Derek Carr lost one of his best weapons on offense when Amari Cooper was traded midseason to the Dallas Cowboys. Carr may loose another offensive weapon, as tight end Jared Cook hits free agency this offseason. Brown would be an electrifying upgrade to Gruden’s offense and immediately give the Raiders a transcendent type of wide receiver that opposing teams would have to game plan for.

Last season Brown played in 15 games, catching 104 passes for 1,297-yards and a league-high 15 receiving touchdowns. Over his nine-year career, Brown has been selected to seven pro bowls and selected as an all-pro four times.

Brown signed a contract extension with the Steelers in 2017 over four-years, worth $68 million. Brown’s average salary per year on his current deal is worth $17 million per year. The Raiders currently have $71 million in cap space for the 2019 season. Coach Gruden also loves having veteran players on his roster and Brown certainly fits the role as a wide receiver with experience and a player who can show the younger guys how to go about perfecting their craft.

The Raiders current roster of wide receivers sets up as:

  • Jordy Nelson
  • Seth Roberts
  • Marcell Ateman
  • Dwayne Harris
  • Keon Hatcher
