In Dallas’ quest to win their first game they’d play the Atlanta Dream. In game two of their homestead prized rookie Arike Ogunbowale would return from the ankle injury that sidelined her from Thursday’s game. Equipped with a deeper bench and a new starting lineup the Wings charged the court.
Straight out of the gates the wings played the game at a ferocious pace forcing the Dream into three early turnovers. Getting off to a hot start the Wings created a 5 to 3 lead thanks to an Allisha Gray layup and Kayla Thornton three-pointer. That bourgeoning hot streak would soon fade, shooting 1-13 from the field to close out. The ending scoring would favor the Dream 13-8.
The second quarter would see Dallas explode for 20 points, 11 coming from Gray and Ogunbowale. The momentum of the swing like a pendulum as neither team could distance themselves from the other. Dallas would be just four points away from the lead.
The third quarter was born of the spark the Wings showed in the first quarter. Coach Agler would call a much-needed timeout to settles the troops, that led shifted the defense into second gear. After terrorizing Atlanta for 10 turnovers in the quarter Dallas created their largest lead of the game. Now with a 1 point lead, Dallas has the momentum to close out their first win.
The fourth belonged to Dallas in every sense of the word. The offense would become second nature as shot after shot would fall leading to an ever-growing lead. As their confidence grew on the offensive side of the ball they used it to apply more pressure on the defensive end closing passing lanes as fast as they open.
Though the team played with heart down the stretch, they proved to be overzealous. Leading to one too many turnovers but not enough to stop their first win. Dallas raised their hands in victory with a roaring crowd in their wake. Now 1-5 on the season the Wings beat the Dream 71-61.
Wings Dreams come true
The key to this win lied in the Wings’ consistency. Dallas has shown glimpses of this winning formula all season they just weren’t able to string enough of those plays together.
The beauty of the win comes in who contributed the most to it. Led by players with less than three years of experience in both scoring and rebounding reinforces the promise this squad possesses. Agler would praise Gray, Ogunbowale, and Kaela Davis following the game highlighting the qualities they showed in Saturday’s victory. Along with Glory Johnson and Kayla Thornton, this group would play the final minutes of the game securing the lead.
Coach Agler credits a lot of the Wing’s win to playing a style the best fits them. In a post-game interview, he’d state, “We were settling a lot in the first half shooting quick pull up jump shot threes sometimes you’re open but I’ll give you an example we did that 23 times in the first half and we scored twice. On the flip side every time we got the ball into the lane or the tunnel first we scored 8 out of 13.”
In a more sentimental approach, this win sends Glory Johnson off with a much-needed win.
