George McPhee “Day 1 of Free Agency was as expected”

July 1st finally arrived and with that came the anticipated 1st Day of Free Agency.  The Golden Knights were able to keep 2 of their own Free Agents as the Re-Signed Brandon Pirri to a 2 Year Deal at $775,000 Per and Tomas Nosek to a 1 Yr $1 Million contract.  The Golden Knights added 4 New Players that were all on the cusp of reaching full time NHL Status, which will now compete in training camp for a Roster spot.  The Golden Knights will have a fierce battle for the final couple of Roster Spots at the NHL Level.  The losers of that will most certainly make the AHL Chicago Wolves a deep team once again.  Those new signings are Tyrell Goulbourne (25   5’11 195 Lbs Left Wing).  Tyrell played for the Lehigh Valley Phantoms (AHL Team of the Flyers) 63 GP 9 G 9 A 18 Pts 135 PIM.   Brett Lernout (23  6’4 214 Lbs Right Shot Physical Defenseman).  Brett played for the Laval Rocket (AHL Team of the Canadiens) 74 GP 4 G 5 A 9 Pts 41 PIM.   Jaycob Megna (26  6’5 218 Lbs Left Shot Defenseman).  Jaycob played for the San Diego Gulls (AHL Team of the Anaheim Ducks) 38 GP 2 G 11 A 13 Pts 20 PIM.  Jaycob also played 28 GP 1 G 3 A 4 Pts and 12 PIM with the Anaheim Ducks.  The most experienced of the new signings Patrick Brown (27  6’1 210 Lbs Center)  also was a teammate of recently acquired Nicolas Roy with the Charlotte Checkers.  Patrick Brown 70 GP 19 G 16 A 35 Pts 32 PIM and he had another 11 GP 5 G 5 A 10 Pts and 18 PIM in Charlotte’s Playoff Run that ended vs the Chicago Wolves.

At the Press Conference George McPhee said that the team has 2 Openings, 1 on the Blueline and 1 in the Bottom 6.  That he liked where the team was and that they brought in some guys to battle.  George also talked about how so many teams overspend on July 1st and that he was glad that they signed Mark Stone a few months ago as Mark Stones Contract would have been higher now than when they signed him.  George McPhee on Gusev “We think he is a really good player, we are trying to work things out.  That if things can’t be worked out, there have been teams reach out to the Golden Knights in regards to Gusev.  Gusev has been really good on the international stage and that he really wants to play in the NHL.  The Golden Knights plan to accomodate his wishes either with them or somewhere else.”  George McPhee on Deryk Engelland  “No real urgency to finalize deal, Deryk knows where they are and they know where he is.  That things should be done in the next week or so.”  George McPhee said that Day 1 of Free Agency was as he expected and that he is very happy with the State of the Vegas Golden Knights.  George McPhee said that no big moves were needed to get under the Salary Cap but that they would continue to listen and to field calls to improve the team.
