Las Vegas, NV- Vegas Sports Daily boxing editor TJ Turkson recently caught up with outspoken lightweight prospect Rolando “Rollies” Romero (7-0, 6 KO) ahead of his next scheduled fight against Argentinian Nicolas Atilio Velazquez (10-4, 3 KO) this Friday, March 9th from Dignity Health Sports Park in Carson, California.
The electrifying knockout artist from Las Vegas by way of Cuba always seems to stay in the news, as his ongoing dispute with top Golden Boy prospect “King Ry” Ryan Garcia has yet to be officially settled -in the ring- in a way that satisfies both of their considerable fan bases. The fast rising young fighters have actually already shared a ring together during a few closed sparring sessions; after which each young pugilist claims to have gotten the better of the work.
Despite- or perhaps because of- this ongoing point of contention, Floyd Mayweather head of The Money Team, of which Romero is a signee, has already offered a reported $200k to Garcia and Golden Boy should they take the fight and actually defeat Romero, in order to get to another TMT fighter in the 13o-lb. ranks, Tank Davis. As of this writing, no word on whether or not Golden Boy execs Eric Gomez and Oscar de la Hoya have accepted the challenge. While the contentious nature of Floyd and Oscar’s relationship has been well documented over the years, here’s hoping that these two icons can put their differences aside in order to provide fight fans the world over with the chance to finally see these two immensely talented young lions actually bump heads in a fight that means something in the near future…
