Gruden/Mayock: “Derek Carr is a Franchise Quarterback”

We are still in the early stages of the Mike Mayock and Jon Gruden relationship. Though, they both appear to enjoy working with one another. Their relationship dates back to 20 years of interacting on and off the football field.

The football offseason is always filled with a massive amount of trades, free agent and draft rumors. Many mock drafts leading up to the combine speculate that the Raiders would select Quarterback Kyler Murray with one of their three first round draft picks.

“I think Derek Carr is a franchise quarterback,” Mayock said. “I truly believe that. Now, do I also believe that it’s a general manager and head coach’s job to keep their job open to improve any position on a football team? Sure. But I think it’s really difficult to try to improve over a franchise quarterback like the one we have in our building right now.”

Mayock provided confidence in his quarterback and rightfully so, Derek Carr has flashed tremendous upside and the ability to grow as a player. Now heading into his second year in Gruden’s offensive system, Gruden is hopeful that his quarterback can take steps forward in year two of the same system.

Carr has been selected to three pro bowls over his five-year career. He was also regarded as an MVP candidate in 2016 when he guided the Raiders to a playoff push before going down with an injury, breaking his leg in week 16. It was the Raiders first playoff berth in 14 years. Following the end of the 2016 season, Carr and the Raiders agreed on a massive 5-year contract worth $125 million.

A day after Mayock made his statement about Carr being their quarterback, Gruden went on to reiterate to the media at the combine “Yes. He’s our franchise quarterback. Let me make that clear,” Gruden said.

Dating back a month ago at the Senior Bowl, Gruden praised Kyler Murray’s ability to play the quarterback position at a high level. After doing so, many thought there could be a potential change at quarterback with the electric Kyler Murray. Or are the Raiders putting speculation out there so it drives up the asking price for opposing teams to trade up into the top 5 of the draft?

The Raiders hold a lot of draft capital in the first two rounds (pick No.4, 24, 27 and 35). Gruden has stated they are open for business by trading up in the draft or trading down. But one thing has been made clear, Carr appears to be the Raiders guy under center moving forward.
