Jermell Charlo scores massive KO and the weekend roundup

Sunday, June 23rd from Las Vegas, Nevada

Jermell Charlo/Jorge Cota

Jermell Charlo knocked out late replacement Jorge Cota in the third round of their junior middleweight bout at the Mandalay Bay Casino.

Charlo (32-1, 16 KO’s) was originally scheduled to fight Tony Harrison however Harrison had to pull out of the bout because of an ankle injury.  Charlo lost his WBC junior middleweight title to Harrison in December and was focused on regaining the title in the rematch.  Instead he redirected that focus and made a statement against Cota.  Mission accomplished.

Cota (28-4, 25 KO’s) came out in an awkward stance that appeared to give Charlo some pause early.  In the third Charlo found his spot and caught Cota with a right hook to the jaw that put him down on the canvas.  Cota beat the count but was destroyed by a charging Charlo who connected with a combination that laid Cota out beneath the ropes to end the fight.

“I want to give a thank you and congratulations to Jorge Cota, he took the defeat but he stepped in the ring,” Charlo said.  “The guy that proclaims the title backed out of the fight and he’s the one who stepped in the ring as fast as he did.”

With all the bad blood between Charlo and Harrison, a fall meeting between the two will definitely be a “must see” event.

Guillermo Rigondeaux/Julio Ceja

The normally overly technical boxer Guillermo Rigondeaux changed things up against Julio Ceja and fought most of the bout inside the pocket and KO’d Ceja in the eighth round of their junior featherweight title eliminator match.

Ceja (32-4, 28 KO’s) surprisingly landed tons of clean shots on Rigondeaux who is best known for his defensive skills.   For the most of the fight Ceja worked the body and bloodied Rigondeaux’s nose.  Ceja was building a comfortable lead when referee Russell Mora deducted a point from both men in the eighth round for low blows.

The break in the fight seemed to give Rigondeaux (19-1, 13 KO’s) the rest he needed and he caught Ceja with a strong left hand that sent him down.  Ceja quickly got up from the knock down and nodded at the referee’s instructions and walked forward when told. Ceja seemed ok but Referee Mora inexplicably waved off the fight with one second remaining in the round.

Ceja and his team immediately stormed out of the ring after the fight was waved off.  Ceja was ahead on all three judges’ cards at the time of the stoppage.

Andrew Cancio/Alberto Machado

Andrew Cancio proved that his first victory over Alberto Machado was no fluke by knocking him out in the third round of their rematch.

Cancio (21-4-2, 15 KO’s) took the fight inside and pounded away at Machado’s body and would catch him with short uppercuts.  In the second round Cancio connected with a big left uppercut that shook Machado.  Machado lasted to the bell but he seemed out of it.

The third round started where the second left off.  Cancio kept catching Machado (21-2, 17 KO’s) with uppercuts and body shots.  Cancio finally delivered the perfect left hook to the body that sent Machado to a knee and gasping for air.  The referee got to the count of nine and then waved off the fight.

“I’m ready for the other champions,” Cancio said after the fight.

Cancio has many options for good fights in the stacked junior lightweight division.  Gervonta Davis, Tevin Farmer, Miguel Berchelt, and Jamel Herring all have a belt in the division.
