Lady Rebels Take First Conference Loss

Yesterday, the UNLV Lady Rebels played game two of their matchup against the Wyoming Cowgirls at Cox Pavillion. While the Lady Rebs played hard and won in the first round of this double-header, they were a bit flat in the second half of yesterday’s game which the Cowgirls won 67 to 62 and split a series wherein each team took one win apiece.

When UNLV Lady Rebels coach Lindy La Roucque yells ‘Early!’, good things seem to happen. She leads a disciplined and talented group, and they listen to their coach intently.

The Lady Rebs’ defense was on full display as many of Wyoming’s possessions would run dangerously close to violating the shot clock. Several ended up in desperation passes and shot attempts, which inevitably led to Cowgirl turnovers.

Simply put, the Lady Rebs were taller and more athletic than the Wyoming Cowgirls. They just fell short down the stretch. The overwhelming presence of Desi-Rae Young and Delaynie Byrne is proving to be a troublesome assignment inside the paint for undersized teams.

For most of the first half, the game was a fairly even affair. With 5 minutes left in the 2nd quarter UNLV and Wyoming were nearly identical in all statistical categories until Rebel center Kiana Wilfred and company, for the second straight appearance, turned on the gas and secured a 2-point halftime lead.

The first half was also quiet for sister duo, and Las Vegas locals Bailey and Jade Thomas who are among the team’s leading scorers with 46 and 35 total points each on the season respectively. Bailey would go 0 for 4, while Jade would only hit 2 of 9.

It was the second half of play where the Lady Rebs could seemingly no longer trade offensive blows. After leading most of the game, Wyoming’s post play coupled with a barrage of deep 3’s, proved to be too much as they would go on to finish the game with a 5 point lead led by Wyoming guard Alba Sanchez Ramos who poured in 20 points.

The Lady Rebels tip-off next aginst Pacific on Sunday, December 19th at 3:30PST in the Duel in the Desert tournament hosted at UNLV’s own Thomas & Mack center.
