Liga MX Clausura Cancelled Due To Growing COVID-19 Concerns

The Coronavirus pandemic has claimed the fate of yet another sports league. Mexico’s top flight soccer league, the Liga MX Clausura, has officially decided to cancel the remainder of the season as the concerns over COVID-19 grow in the country.

A league statement was issued stating how their collaborations with the federal government’s health department led them to come to this tough decision because of the constant setback and delays suffered by the ongoing spread of the virus.

“In recent weeks, permanent working groups and talks have been held with the federal government’s health department that would allow us to resume the 2020 Clausura responsibly… However, the time of the [pandemic] that we are living through has caused increasing schedule restrictions, which do not allow us to continue the competition without putting at risk the members of this great family. Therefore, in absolute unity, the Extraordinary Assembly of the LIGA MX agreed to conclude the Liga MX 2020 Clausura for both the men’s and women’s leagues.”

The initial idea was to have the Mexican soccer league return in early July, but with the mixture of having no set return date and growing numbers of players and staff contracting the virus, it was an imminent fate for the Central American soccer league. A day prior to the cancellation of the league, Santos Laguna (a team ending the season in third place) announced that 12 players tested positive for the Coronavirus. This is the most cases in one club globally and it would’ve been a bad look for the league if they continued on marauding towards a return date.

Similar to the Dutch Eredivisie, the Liga MX Clausura will have no real closure. Although Cruz Azul and Leon will qualify for next season’s CONCACAF Champions League, there will be an absence of a league champion.
