“Adding this young, hungry prospect puts us in position to open doors and create opportunities for him. He has a very bright future ahead.” Leonard Ellerbe, CEO Mayweather Promotions
Las Vegas – Floyd Mayweather’s Mayweather Promotions, fresh off the success of the most likely in-house heir apparent to assume the mantle of the biggest draw in boxing from the company’s namesake, went back to Baltimore -the hometown of their current biggest star, Gervonta “Tank” Davis- to sign rising undefeated welterweight prospect Malik “The Iceman” Hawkins earlier this week.
Hawkins, who is already 16-0 with 9 wins coming by way of knockout, is the latest prized pupil to come out of West Baltimore’s renowned Upton Gym. The 23-year-old was a celebrated amateur before turning pro in 2014, compiling a remarkable record of 160-15 in the amateur ranks, and winning numerous national championships, as well as a bronze medal at the 2012 Junior Olympics.
In response to finally signing his promotional pact with Mayweather Promotions, Hawkins said the following: “It feels great. I can’t believe the day is finally here: signing with Mayweather Promotions. This experience has really taught me that being patient and putting in the hard work will get you through anything in life.” Hawkins is trained under the watchful eye of coach Calvin Ford; and has spent countless hours in camp with Tank Davis, who also trains under Coach Ford’s tutelage, a fact that was not lost on Hawkins. “It’s a plus having my brother, Tank, someone I grew up with and train with fighting in the same stable too,” said Hawkins.
Hawkins last time in the ring, in fact, came on the undercard of his stablemate Davis’ smashing hometown return, as Hawkins earned a wide unanimous decision victory in front of his hometown faithful.
