NBA eyeing Disney to resume season in July

The NBA is hoping to resume their season in late July with the House of Mouse playing host in Florida.

The ESPN Wide World of Sports Complex, which sits just outside Orlando, is a 255-acre campus with multiple arenas and nearly 24,000 Disney-owned hotel rooms at its disposal. ESPN, a NBA broadcast partner for many years, is chiefly owned by Disney as well making it a seemingly-perfect scenario for the league to conclude its season which was suspended indefinitely on March 11 because of the coronavirus pandemic.

What remains unclear is how many regular season games would be played, and if all 30 teams would participate. The general consensus from league officials about the postseason is that teams would almost certainly play the traditional best-of-seven format. The NBA has been working with team General Managers and owners on multiple scenarios, gathering input on each matter.

No information has been released on how the NBA would handle continued COVID-19 testing of players, team personnel and essential broadcast staff.

Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis has reopened the state on May 18 and urged pro leagues and teams from around the country to consider Florida for a continuation for their seemingly lost seasons. So far, the UFC has held several events in Jacksonville after a weeks-long absence of events. Sports entertainment company World Wrestling Entertainment has also held events in the reopened Sunshine State.

Major League Soccer is also eyeing Florida, and the ESPN Complex, as an option to get their season underway again, although no proposals have been officially submitted or verified.
