As the NFL prepares for key offseason events such as the NFL Draft and its annual meeting, league officials are keeping a close eye on potential complications from the ongoing coronavirus outbreak.
The NFL is scheduled to hold its annual summit meeting for owners, team executives, coaches and other officials from March 29 to April 1 in Palm Beach, Florida. Preparations are already well underway for the 2020 NFL Draft in Las Vegas, which runs from April 23 to 25 and will require a temporary shutdown of the Las Vegas Strip.
“The NFL continues to closely monitor coronavirus developments and has been in contact with the World Health Organization, the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and the NFL-NFLPA’s medical experts at the Duke Infection Control Outreach Network (DICON),” the NFL said in a statement. “We will continue those discussions throughout the offseason.”
VegasSportsDaily.com spoke with an NFL Draft Prospect about the current state of sports in a brief interview.
Q: What are your overall thoughts on the coronavirus?
A: I feel like it’s another virus, the media is just putting 10 on it.
Q: Would you ever play in a game with the risk of COVID-19 in the stadium, because of uncertain conditions?
A: I feel like you can get the virus playing or not playing. The location or sport doesn’t make it easier to get. I do see why people are canceling things though.
Q: How does the threat of the coronavirus impact your pro day?
A: Yes, it impacts my pro day because they are talking about postponing it and some coaches are not attending due to the virus.
Q: If the NFL cancels Draft weekend, because of the coronavirus does it matter to you?
A: Yes, I want the draft to go on, because I am a great choice for any team that wants to take the chance on me. I am not the average DB and I will make a team better in any aspect of the game that I have to.
At present, there are no changes planned to the NFL Draft or the annual league meeting, according to reports. However, that could change if coronavirus continues its rapid progression.
NFL teams regularly invite top college football stars to private workouts or meetings prior to the draft.
