NFL Owners Give Raiders the Approval to Play in Oakland

The Raiders officially have a home for their 2019 season. Today kicked off the owners meeting in Phenix, Arizona, where they approved the Raiders 2019 stadium lease to play in Oakland. No surprise here, as it was expected for the owners to approve the lease for the Raiders to remain in Oakland for their 24th consecutive season.

It was unclear which direction the Raiders were leaning towards, when finding a home field for the 2019 season. By getting this approval, it gives players, coaches and the Raiders fan base their home destination for this upcoming season. If all goes as planned, this will officially be the Raiders final season in Oakland. The franchise is set to make their debut in Las Vegas at the start of the 2020 season.

Raiders owner Mark Davis will pay $7.5 million dollars to rent the stadium in Oakland for 2019, which is an elevated rate from his $3.5 million that he paid last season. The agreement between the Raiders and the city of Oakland also comes with an option for the 2020 season if the Las Vegas stadium is not done in time. The 2020 season would cost them $10.5 million if they stay in Oakland.

Prior to the Raiders coming to an agreement with the Oakland-Alameda County Coliseum, they flirted with the idea of playing their home games at Oracle Park in San Fransisco and Levi Stadium in Santa Clara. Neither of those alternative options could come together, and they are back where they started.
