The Raiders made huge moves in the 2019 NFL Draft, with nine selections; a third of them coming in the first round. Their first round selections included pass rusher Clelin Ferrell, running back Josh Jacobs, and safety Jonathan Abram. Ferrell and Jacobs will likely start from day one, with Abram and second round pick Trayvon Mullen starting the season as rotational players in the secondary. The Raiders selected another Clemson player, Hunter Renfrow in the fifth round, who has a great shot to open the season as the starting slot receiver.
However, their best quality selection may have been their quick decision to sign UDFA Te’Von Coney from Notre Dame. Coney was projected by many as a second to fourth round talent, but amazingly went undrafted… much to his chagrin.
He certainly wasn’t shy about his disappointment, and deservedly so. To be told you’re an early round talent, to falling completely out, can’t feel good. If you don’t believe in Coney based off of my words or many draft experts, lets just take a look closer to his impact he had last season.
Pro Football Focus has become one of the most reputable sites when it comes to tracking player impact, as it focuses on more than just your standard stats, focusing on advanced measures that turn good football players into great football players. Coney excels in nearly every category you want as a middle linebacker, with the biggest knock coming in his sideline to sideline speed. Coney also gives the Raiders the ability to move Brandon Marshall out to the SAM linebacker, where he is more suited. Coney was the quarterback of the Irish defense last year that made it to the College Football Playoff. Coney has an intimidating frame, but won’t show it as he hits you, but he won’t miss tackles.
Coney will easily make the Raiders opening day roster, and don’t be surprised if you see him lining up in that middle linebacker position on play #1
