Raiders projected depth chart heading into training camp

The Raiders will try to improve upon their 7-9 record in a new city with a brand new stadium.

In case you missed it, the Raiders will now be playing their games in Las Vegas at Allegiant Stadium. Although they will have to deal with the defending Super Bowl champion Kansas City Chiefs twice, there’s a lot of optimism with the Raiders.

Las Vegas had two first-round picks in wide receiver Henry Ruggs and cornerback Damon Arnette. Along with budding stars Josh Jacobs, Darren Waller, and Max Crosby, the Raiders certainly have some building blocks for the future.

The most intriguing question is, how will Derek Carr perform in his third system in Jon Gruden’s system? Last season, Carr threw for 4,054, 21 touchdowns, and eight interceptions.

Gruden has improved the weapons around Carr, so this could be a bit of a make-or-break season for the former Pro Bowler. Since his 2016 season, Carr has failed to throw more than 22 touchdowns. Just in case Carr is injured or ineffective, the Raiders do have a backup plan but more on that later.

With all that in mind, it is time to preview the Raiders heading into training camp and what their depth chart might look like.

QB Derek Carr Marcus Mariota Nathan Peterman
RB Josh Jacobs Jalen Richard Lynn Bowden Jr. Devontae Booker
LWR Henry Ruggs Zay Jones Rico Gafford Anthony Ratliff-Williams
RWR Tyrell Williams Bryan Edwards Marcell Ateman Keelan Doss
SWR Hunter Renfrow Nelson Agholor De’Mornay Pierson-El
TE Darren Waller Jason Witten Foster Moreau Derek Carrier
LT Kolton Miller Brandon Parker Sam Young
LG Richie Incognito Erik Magnuson Lester Cotton
C Rodney Hudson Andre James Jordan Devey
RG Gabe Jackson Eric Kush John Simpson Kamaal Seymour*
RT Trent Brown David Sharpe Denzelle Good

Marcus Mariota will begin the season as the Raiders backup quarterback. During his five seasons with the Tennessee Titans, Mariota had his ups and downs but ultimately was the odd man out after Ryan Tannehill became the future in Nashville.

21 years ago, Gruden revived another quarterback’s career in Rich Gannon, who was a journeyman when he signed with the Raiders in 1999. During his time with the Raiders, Gannon was named to four straight Pro Bowls and won the 2002 NFL MVP the year after Gruden was traded to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. So don’t be surprised if Mariota does see some time under center this season.

Elsewhere, the Raiders have surrounded Carr with weapons as Ruggs will join receiving corps led by Tyrell Williams and Hunter Renfrow, who played above expectation as a fifth-round pick with 49 receptions, 605 yards and four touchdowns last season. Jacobs is back for his sophomores campaign after rushing 1,150 rushing yard debut. Darren Waller returns after recording 90 catches for 1,145-yards and three touchdowns, and he has a new backup in veteran Jason Witten, who comes over from the Dallas Cowboys.

Lastly, the Raiders return on of the better offensive lines in the league led by Rodney Hudson, Trent Brown, and Richie Incognito.

DE Clelin Ferrell Carl Nassib Jeremiah Valoaga
DT Maurice Hurst Johnathan Hankins Kendal Vickers
DT Maliek Collins P.J. Hall Daniel Ross
DE Maxx Crosby Arden Key Ade Aruna
SLB Nick Kwiatkoski Ukeme Eligwe Justin Phillips
MLB Cory Littleton Marquel Lee Nick Usher
WLB Nicholas Morrow Kyle Wilber Tanner Muse
LCB Prince Amukamara Damon Arnette Nevin Lawson
RCB Trayvon Mullen Isaiah Johnson D.J. Killings
SCB Lamarcus Joyner Amik Robertson
FS Damarious Randall Erik Harris Javin White
SS Johnathan Abram Jeff Heath Dallin Leavitt

The most significant question mark for the Raiders is certainly their defense. Last season, the Raiders finished 19th in total defense and 24th in points given up per game.

Nick Kwiatkoski and Cory Littleton were brought in to improve the linebacking corps. Prince Amukamara and Damarious Randall also improves Las Vegas’ secondary, and Arnette is an exciting player for the future. Having Amukamara gives the Raiders the opportunity to let Arnette learn from a veteran cornerback for a season.

On their defensive line, Crosby registered 10 sacks along with 47 tackles. He will be joined by Clelin Ferrell, who was the Raiders 2019 first-round pick. Ferrell recorded just 4.5 sacks in 15 games. Raiders also have two solid defensive tackles in Maurice Hurst and Maliek Collins along with some depth with Johnathan Hankins and P.J. Hall.

Special Teams

K Daniel Carlson Dominik Eberle
P A.J. Cole
LS Trent Sieg Liam McCullough
KR Jalen Richard Hunter Renfrow
PR Jalen Richard Hunter Renfrow

Last year, Trevor Davis led the Raiders in both punt and kickoff returns. He is now with the Chicago Bears, so the Raiders will need to find a new player at both returner spots. Jalen Richard ranked second on the team in both kickoff and punt returns in 2019. Renfrow also returned five punts last year, so he could possibly get a shot at the role too. Also, don’t rule out Lynn Bowden Jr., who returned 71 kick returns and nine punt returns in college at Kentucky.
