Ryan Garcia impresses and the weekend round up

Saturday, March 30th from Indio, California

Ryan Garcia/Jose Lopez

Lightweight super prospect Ryan Garcia remained undefeated when the corner for Jose Lopez threw in the towel between the 2nd and 3rd round.

The twenty year old Garcia (18-0, 15 KO’s) was way too fast for Lopez (20-4-1, 14 KO’s) to counter.  In the first round Garcia showed his superior quickness early on and hurt Lopez late in the round with wicked shots to the head.  Garcia kept up his punch count in the second and finally landed a huge right uppercut that dropped Lopez late in the round.  Lopez’s corner had seen enough and mercifully threw in the towel before the start of the third.

Garcia seems to be adding more power now that he has switched to new trainer Eddy Reynoso.  Reynoso is the well-respected trainer of Canelo Alvarez.

Next up for Ryan Garcia is a fight on the Canelo Alvarez/Danny Jacobs undercard May 4th against an opponent to be named later.

Saturday, March 30th from Philadelphia, Pennsylvania

Oleksandr Gvozdyk/Doudou Ngumbu

Oleksandr Gvozdyk defended his WBC light heavyweight belt when Doudou Ngumbu injured his right calf in the fifth round and was unable to continue.  Gvozdyk (17-0, 14 KO’s) was leading 4-0 on two judges’ cards and 3-1 on the other when the fight was called.  It was an odd way for Gvozdyk to win but he was happy nonetheless.

“My goal is to unify titles,” Gvozdyk said after defeating Ngumbu (38-9, 14 KO’s).  “I will wait and see what my team tells me to do next.”

In order to unify the titles, Gvozdyk will need to defeat WBO champ Sergey Kovalev (33-3-1, 28 KO’s), IBF champ Artur Beterbiev (13-0, 13 KO’s) and WBA titleholder Dmitry Bivol (16-0, 11 KO’s).
