Showtime Boxing is back; big names to return to the ring

For the better part of the summer Top Rank Boxing has stood alone with its return to live boxing for fight fans around the world that have been in quarantine because of the coronavirus pandemic.

Until now.

Showtime Boxing and Premier Boxing Champions noted on their website the news of their return.

Showtime Championship Boxing: SHOWTIME Sports and Premier Boxing Champions announced a lineup of nine live boxing events featuring 18 undefeated fighters, nine world champions, and eight world championship fights including one world title unification bout. The schedule comprises 22 critical matchups from bantamweight to heavyweight and features some of the biggest stars in the sport today ‚Äď Gervonta Davis, Leo Santa Cruz, Jermall Charlo, Jermell Charlo, David Benavidez and Nonito Donaire.

Here’s the schedule through the end of 2020 so far, of course, everything is subject to change:

The biggest event, in terms of sheer size, is the Sept. 26 pay-per-view double header featuring the Charlo twins. The event will host a full day of fights with a fight card in the morning and a full fight card in the evening for one price.

The exact price for the pay per view hasn’t been released but according to Showtime executive Stephen Espinoza it will fall in line with most boxing pay per view events.

Also up for grabs is which Charlo brother will headline which event. Although they’re listed out in a way that suggests that Jermall Charlo, the WBC middleweight champion, will fight in the evening’s main event that’s hardly a lock. Showtime has said a finalized fight card will be released closer to the event date.

All in all, it looks like an incredibly potent line-up of cards and fighters with the one notable absence being women’s powerhouse and three-division world champion Claressa Shields, who didn’t seem pleased about being left off the slate of announced cards.

Time will tell if Showtime will announce more fights in the future or if this line-up is set in stone, but with all the shine and glare from gold belts and golden promises that’s one glaring omission.
